One Species, Whole Building
Ipe earned its reputation horizontally — decks, boardwalks, docks. But the properties that make it the decking benchmark at Janka 3,510 make it equally at home vertical and overhead: density that shrugs off impact, natural oils that resist rot and insects without treatment, and a 40-plus-year service life in full exposure.
Architects increasingly spec it as a single-material envelope: deck, rainscreen facade, soffit, and screen wall in one species, weathering in unison. The result reads intentional in a way mixed materials rarely do.
Siding: Rainscreen Done Right
Ipe rainscreen hangs on clip systems over a ventilated cavity, which keeps the wall assembly dry and lets each board move independently. Because the wood is kiln-dried and milled four sides at premium grade, joints stay tight and shadow lines stay straight — the two things that make or break an open-joint facade.
In coastal and hurricane-exposed markets, density is the quiet advantage: Ipe cladding has been hurricane-tested on real projects, and at 69 lbs per cubic foot it does not behave like siding in the debris sense. Stainless fasteners near salt water are the only special requirement.
Ceilings and Soffits
Overhead, Ipe is usually milled to T&G or nickel-gap profiles and installed as porch ceilings, exterior soffits, and covered outdoor rooms. Its color range — chocolate through olive-brown — brings warmth that painted soffit never will, and the density means no sagging, cupping runs, or woodpecker damage.
Weight is the design consideration: overhead Ipe wants a real fastening schedule, which our branches supply with the material. Custom milling turns any of our stock dimensions into the profile on the drawing.
Docks and the Splash Zone
Docks are where Ipe stops being a premium choice and becomes the default. It is rated for marine contact without treatment — the same specification that puts it on oceanfront boardwalks — and it serves both as decking and structurally, so the frame and surface can be one species.
Thicker 5/4x6 profiles handle seawall caps and dock surfaces where boat wake and salt spray retire lesser materials in a decade. Our Florida and coastal Massachusetts yards stock these profiles continuously because the marine trade never stops ordering them.
