The Catalog Is a Starting Point
Standard decking profiles cover most decks. They do not cover a rainscreen facade with a 6mm open joint, a tongue-and-groove soffit that dies into a steel reveal, or trim that has to match a 1948 profile on a landmarked porch. That is mill work, and we do it in-house on the same Brazilian hardwood and thermally modified stock we import.
Every hardwood and thermally modified dimension we carry is available with custom milling — siding profiles, ceilings, trim, and molding. The input is premium-grade, kiln-dried, milled-four-sides lumber, which is exactly why the output holds tolerance.
Rainscreen and Cladding Profiles
Open-joint rainscreen is where custom milling earns its keep. Back-ventilation kerfs, eased edges sized to the architect's shadow line, and clip-system grooves cut to the fastener manufacturer's spec — all machined before delivery, so the installer is hanging boards, not shaping them.
Ipe and thermally modified wood are two of the most-specified cladding inputs. Ipe suits impact and coastal exposure; thermally modified wood provides dimensional stability and lighter weight on tall elevations, backed by 20-year warranties. Both arrive labeled by elevation when the cut list calls for it.
Ceilings, Soffits, and Interior Runs
T&G and nickel-gap profiles for ceilings and soffits are our most common interior mill orders. The difference from big-box T&G is the stock: dense hardwood machined dry means joints that stay closed through humidity swings, which is what a long exterior soffit run demands.
We also match existing profiles. Send a cutoff or a drawing with dimensions; the mill grinds knives to match. Historic trim, plinth blocks, and handrail sections come through weekly.
How to Order Mill Work
Send the drawing — a PDF detail, a SketchUp export, even a dimensioned sketch — with species, linear footage, and finish side to your nearest branch. You get back a per-linear-foot price and a lead time, typically one to three weeks depending on knife work.
Minimums are modest and quoted honestly: short runs carry a setup cost, and the branch will tell you when a stock profile gets you 95% of the way for half the price. Nine branches, one mill standard.
