Names do not define performance
A wall product can be described as siding, cladding or a panel without telling you where it can be used. Confirm exterior versus interior use, profile geometry, installation orientation and the manufacturer's approved attachment. A decorative interior slat panel is not automatically an exterior weathering product.
Separate the finish from water management
The visible finish is only one layer. Exterior walls need the appropriate weather barrier, flashing and drainage details behind it. Openings, corners and changes of material deserve particular attention. Have the installer coordinate the selected finish with the wall design rather than relying on the word cladding to imply waterproofing.
Compare materials and their maintenance
Composite and PVC cladding are distinct product families; hardwood, thermally modified wood and acetylated Accoya are also different. Compare the specific collection's profile, color samples, compatible trims and installation manual. With natural wood, decide whether to maintain a finished tone or allow weathering. With manufactured products, confirm the cleaning guidance and warranty conditions for that exact line.
